Steroid Injection

Steroid Injections

Also known as: Cortisone, Corticosteroid, Glucocorticoid

How do Steroid Injections Work?

Steroid injections, often referred to as corticosteroid injections, are a medical treatment involving the injection of synthetic corticosteroids directly into a targeted area of the body, such as joints or muscles.

These injections work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response, which can help alleviate pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with various conditions, including arthritis, tendinitis, and bursitis.

Due to their potent effects there is a limit the frequency and total number of injections to avoid potential side effects.

What can I expect if I decide to have a Steroid Injection?

If you decide to have a Steroid Injection, the medication will be injected directly into the affected area.

Typically, steroid injections require just one injection, but sometimes multiple injections may be needed depending on your condition.

You may not notice immediate benefits after the first injection - you should gradually start to feel less pain and inflammation over the next few days.

The effect of the steroid is likely to last between 6 and 12 weeks. It is important that whilst your symptoms have improved you follow all the physiotherapy advise to ensure that your affected area get better in the long term.

Steroid Injections are not a magic bullet but give you a window of opportunity to focus on gettting the issue better.
